Each child or middle schooler finds joy in different types of music and activities. We can use the Faber Piano Adventures method, or we can use a different method if your child expresses interest. We will also supplement your lessons with other exercises, games, arrangements, and repertoire - we will also identify new music that will both push your child to new pianistic limits and earn their attention. Method books alone are not enough to accomplish your goals at the piano, and students benefit from a teacher with a working knowledge of graded piano literature and pedagogy material.
Holistic Technical Foundation
We will practice good hand position, posture, and even the art of tension-free playing. This may not seem important for beginning pianists, but good technique will prevent injuries and discomfort in the future. It also allows students to play faster, with better dynamics, and with a better tone.
Learn Theory and Practical Skills
Our students are not robots that simply play tunes on the piano by rote. They learn the fundamentals of key signatures, time signatures, chord patterns, musical form, and more. This allows students to enjoy music (of all kinds!) better, and it allows them to learn piano music more quickly.
Become a Fluent Note Reader
We value fluent note reading at Alexandria Music Studio. We’ll learn notes on the treble and bass clefs, and students learn to read music playing with both hands together. Ultimately, our students are able to pick up a level-appropriate piece of music and “sight read” it. This can unlock opportunities for collaborative piano activities in the future, and it makes it much easier to learn new music.

Keeping Things Fun For Kids
Each child is different. Some students love to sit at the piano and practice with flashcards and academic drills, while others learn better through musical games “off the bench.” Others enjoy playing classical music from an early age, while some students enjoy transcription of movie scores or pop songs more. We will work together to find out what keeps your child interested in lessons, and include those activities in lessons and our practice strategy.
Keeping Lessons Flexible For Adults
Adults often have specific goals for the piano. We encourage you to share your musical goals with us so we can tailor your experience accordingly. Many adult students want to play a set of holiday tunes, play in a garage band, participate in worship, or ultimately learn a specific piece, like the Moonlight Sonata. We can start focusing on your unique goals right from the beginning.
